  • Why did the saga made some women, like Gudrid and Thorbjorg the “Little Prophetess” important and superior in the saga?

  • Is there a psychiatric condition where a person believes that they are a vampire and actually drinks blood?

  • When the saga introduces a new character, it always tell us the parents of this person, often the grandparents, and sometimes beyond. The lineages detailed here usually have nothing to do with the story in the saga, so I wonder why do the author go the length to tell us all about people’s family lines? I think a lot of the audience of the sagas did not even care about these lineages.

Is there any significance of Eirik being reluctant to convert to christianity while his wife was so willing to?

  • Near the end of the saga, Karlsefni captured two native boys, converted them to Christians and taught them his language. What is the significance of this capture and how would these boys contribute to the spread of Christianity?

  • In both Buffy and Eirik the red saga’s there were mentions of christinaity in the background, but neither eirik (well his wife converted, but i don’t think he did) nor Buffy (at least i don’t think so) are Christians. Was there a significant meaning to these background indications of Christianity? And if there was, why weren’t Eirik and Buffy Christians?

There were even mentions of some in Beowulf, a few.

  • Is the saga written by one person? Where would the writer(s) have gathered information from? How did they know information they used was valid since the events took place centuries ago?
Was it a historical, social, philosophical, or religious influence that made the writer(s) include women and their roles in the saga?

  • If in every generation a new girl is given slayer powers then why do Buffys powers not get transferred to another girl when Buffy dies? Also how does the theft of human hearts get explained to the people of Sunnydale?

  • First I would like to make a comment about Buffy the Vampire Slayer (as a first time viewer of the series). The ability of the director to convey the emotions of the characters through facial expressions and their actions (with their lack of a voice) was impressive. My question is: What is it about a female’s scream that destroys the evil characters?

  • In Eirik the Red’s Saga, why did the men agree to follow Aud on her trip to Iceland (accepting a woman as a leader)?

What role or importance do family names play in Eirik the Red’s Saga?

  • Buffy is certainly established as an empowered, independent heroine. However, there are instances in which she appears to be easily swept off her feet by men (ie. in this episode, when she sees Riley in the streets and runs into his embrace). Does this make Buffy appear weaker in any way?

  • my google searches of “the gentlemen” only brought up crap bands and other non-fairy tale related results. what story were those guys actually from? why were the henchmen in straitjackets? or was the whole thing just made up for the episode? i didn’t immediately recognize any references to fairy tales that i know. also, there weren’t any clues to their motivation for stealing peoples’ hearts (if i recall correctly), that would’ve been interesting to see. the key to their defeat being an unconvinving little scream seemed kind of like a cop out ending.

  • Did the Eirik The Red’s Saga originally start off orally as people told stories and then informations were added on to make the full Saga that we are reading now?

  • In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was a scene near the end where Buffy and Riley were fighting in the clock tower. One of the Gentlemen’s hunchmen was attacking Riley, and he seemed to be in danger. At the same time, the hunchman that Buffy was fighting with was escaping. Buffy stopped for a moment and looked at Riley, who was in trouble, then hesitated and went after the ecaping hunchman instead. Does this mean that Buffy feels more obligated to her sense of duty of protecting others (the public)more than she does for her loved ones? Also, why did the Gentlemen specifically choose to attack the first victim? Was there a special reason for it?

  • Throughout the entire Eirik the Red’s Saga, ancestral lineage is very detailed and exact. How was this ancestry recorded? Was it orally? How were all the names remembered if it was passed down in oral tradition instead of in writing?

  • What is the signifance of the number 7, why 7 hearts? Is the box that collects the voices of the citizens of Sunnydale in any way related to the pandora’s box?
What happens to Leif’s son Thorgils? Eirik’s saga mentions that Thorgils had ’something preternatural about him, making readers think that something extraordinary is going to happen to him.

  • Was there a translation of the Bible at the time of Eirik the Red (so that non-Latin speaking Christians could understand it)? Because it was interesting to note that the Vikings had a very good understanding of the issue of ‘unclean food’ (ie: whale-meat).

Also, what do the Gentlemen do with the seven hearts? Did they just appear in Sunnydale? Why did it take Giles so long to decipher the meaning of the song Buffy dreamt of? Why did he need to see a drawing of one of the Gentlemen before realizing which Fairytale characters they were dealing with?

  • Anya, the ex-demon in Buffy, used to be called Aud. She had a relationship with a man named Oleif in the 800’s… Is this the same Aud as in Eirik the Red?
